Lawrence Mannion

Allied Victory Medal

Lawrence was born in Stockport on the 21st June 1893. He lived at 16 Albion Street with his mother and father. His father was in the Navy and his mother was called Marie and worked as a Cotton Operative Spinner. Lawrence had two sisters, Mary and Margaret.

It is thought that Lawrence joined the Army on the 1st August 1915. He was given the service number of 2757 and was placed in 1/8th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

Lawrence fought in both the Balkans and, later, in France. He was captured at Saint Quentin on the 22nd March 1918. He was sent to Langensalza prisoner of war camp. This is located in Germany and held up to 10,000 prisoners. This likely where he spent the rest of the war.

After the war, Lawrence stayed in the Army but was transferred to the King's Regiment (Liverpool). He was given a new service number of 204757. He died in April of 1933 aged 39 of unknown causes.

Lawrence’s medal was donated to the museum collections in 2013.
